Pope's Mass on the Washington, D.C. Mall, 1979
ARTIST STATEMENT
This is an image of the outdoor Mass offered by Pope Saint John Paul II on the Washington, D. C. Mall, Sunday, October 7, 1979. It faces the Washington Monument and includes a custom-made wooden altar used by Pontiff. In 1981, St. Bernadette Parish in Springfield, Virginia received the altar, where it is still in use. The image was digitized in December 2025 from a Kodacolor II (C-41) ISO 100 color negative.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
David E. Balducchi ('70) is retired from the U. S. Department of Labor in Washington D. C., an Advisory Board member of Social Justice Linking Together, a member of the National Academy of Social Insurance, and a past president of the National Capital Area Political Science Association. An amateur photographer for many years, he enjoys capturing documentary images.
