Life After Deer Season

I left greatness out to dry last night.
You can find its body left in a field, headless.
Some wild, caught, big-game trophy
meant for a plaque and a wall.
A buck’s antlers are his trophy.
My trophies are memories, moments
preserved like crystal. Each facet reflecting
the motions of a well-lived youth.
My antlers are well-loved,
but they will shed with the seasons.
I will preserve the body
and pray for one more winter.
