Overwhelmed
ARTIST STATEMENT
I have arrived at a point in my life where I am confident and proud of the person that I have become, yet couldn’t seem to resolve the emotional trauma that I developed during my childhood. These feelings became a daily reminder and affected how I dealt with current situations and relationships. Consumed and exhausted, I had to get these feelings out the only way I knew how; through my pottery. I created a whole series of work that focused on individual instances and relationships. As I worked, I infused these emotions into my pieces and began to release them from myself. In Ginger’s Journey I have captured one such pivotal moment in my life, where after graduating from St. Ambrose University, I drove across the country to live in Los Angeles. On one side of this piece I have carved the rolling hills, farmland, and barns one would typically see in Iowa. My 1982 Buick Skylark is seen making its way along a gravel road towards Los Angeles with its iconic downtown skyline with my first home carved in at the end. The narrative of this piece along with rhythmically carving has been an emotional, but healing process.
