Hazy Sun, High Above

ARTIST STATEMENT

As the days lengthen, I look forward to when it’s light enough for evening walks. Although my office workspace is comfortable and secure, a changing landscape is refreshing and challenging. I swap fluorescent lights for sunlight, climate-controlled chill for wind, whether gentle or fierce.

This natural world invigorates my traditional and digital art. My abstract landscapes come from memory, observation, and invention. Paintings begin with lively marks and color – drips, wide stripes, quick lines. My digital drawings are similar, a collection of shapes and interesting textures. It’s fun to create, but hard to explore!

As I wander through the confusion, memories and observations guide me. In jumbled brushstrokes, I re-create the brambles I pass at the park. In the angular lines of a digital brush, I find rock fissures.

My scenes come to life with light, just as sunlight enlivens me. I paint rosy light shining shyly on rippled ice. On my computer screen, I mimic the eerie warmth of a hazy copper sun, hanging in the sky as wildfires burn far away.

I keep exploring our relationship with nature. What do we observe in the world around us?

Maybe I’ll understand more after another walk.
