During my undergraduate schooling, I entertained the idea of becoming a medical illustrator, but insecurity led me to pursue other options. Later in life personal trauma brought this subject back to the forefront of my thoughts. Dealing with sickness, death, and loss now led to fear, anxiety, and ultimately an obsession with medicine, hospitals, macabre, afterlife. I collected images, phrases, lyrics, bits and pieces of life and death. I started to arrange, connect, cut and glue. I started to feel better. I found a tangible way to unravel some of my feelings and thoughts. Collage gives me a way to use my design sense in a physical way: drawing, writing, photo transfer, vinyl letters, cutting, gluing, puzzling pieces together. While the imagery in my recent work is all recognizable, it’s the connections I make among them that push the work into the fantasy realm. This work is as much about creating art as it is about letting go of fear—of failure, of missing out, of not living. : Objects, words, drawn, painted, glued, sewn, transferred.
